Learning Goals

What students will know and be able to do

🌱 Big Science Ideas

Plants make their own food through photosynthesis; plant structures serve specific functions; plants have life cycles; plants are producers in ecosystems.

🎯Measurable Objectives

Students will diagram and explain photosynthesis; identify plant parts and their functions; describe plant life cycles; analyze food webs showing energy flow.

🔬 Skills Developed

Scientific observation, hypothesis formation, data collection, diagramming, cause-and-effect reasoning, systems thinking, academic vocabulary.

Standards Alignment

📋NGSS Standards (Next Generation Science Standards)

Standard: Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.

How This Pack Addresses It: Lessons 1-3 explicitly teach photosynthesis with hands-on experiments showing how plants use CO₂ and water. Students collect evidence and construct arguments using data from their observations.

Standard: Develop models to describe that organisms have unique and diverse life cycles.

Coverage: Lesson 5 focuses on plant life cycles with modeling activities and comparison to animal life cycles.

📖 Common Core ELA Connections

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.6-8.3: Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.WHST.6-8.2: Write informative/explanatory texts, including scientific processes.

All lab activities include step-by-step procedures students must read and follow. Exit tickets require written explanations of scientific concepts.

🗺️Grade Band Fit & Full Standards Mapping

Primary Grades: 4-6
Adaptable For: Grades 3 (with scaffolding) and 7 (with extensions)

Download the complete standards alignment document (included in pack) showing exactly which lesson addresses which standard, complete with success criteria and assessment alignment.

How to Use This Pack

Flexible implementation designed for real classrooms

Engage

Start each lesson with a podcast episode or real-world connection to hook student interest and activate prior knowledge.

Explore

Students investigate through hands-on activities, observations, or experiments before formal instruction.

Explain

Use the slide deck to introduce vocabulary and concepts, building on student discoveries from the Explore phase.

Apply

Look for real-world connections. Notice plants around you. Ask new questions. Let curiosity lead.

Assess

Exit tickets provide formative assessment. Unit assessments measure mastery against standards.
