Predict the Explosion
Before touching anything โ predict together: which way will the colors move when the soap touches the center? Toward the soap or away from it?
Run the Experiment
Add food coloring to milk, touch the center with a soapy cotton swab, and observe. Then repeat with skim milk and compare the results.
Connect to Soap Science
Talk about why soap is so good at cleaning. It breaks up fat and grease using the same trick it used in the milk โ surface tension disruption.
MULTI-AGE TIP
Ages 5-7: Focus on which direction the colors moved. Ask them to predict before each touch. Ages 8-12: Introduce the words surfactant and molecule. Challenge them to explain in their own words what soap does to the fat molecules.

Big Idea
Milk contains fat molecules that hold onto each other at the surface โ that's surface tension. Soap is a surfactant that breaks those connections. The fat molecules race away from the soap as fast as possible, dragging the food coloring with them.
Making predictions about direction of movement, observing fast-moving visual change, comparing results across two milk types (a controlled variable test), and explaining a chemical process using age-appropriate language.
