About Bella the Butterfly
Monarch Butterfly (Biology Specialist)
Bella started life as a caterpillar, spent weeks as a chrysalis, and emerged as a completely different-looking creature â a transformation she describes as the single most amazing thing that has ever happened to her, which is exactly why she hosts Living Things for Kids 5â8. Bella covers the basics of biology: what makes something alive, how living things grow and change, life cycles, basic needs of plants and animals, and the incredible diversity of life on Earth. Bella treats her own metamorphosis as proof that biology is full of genuine magic â magic that happens to be completely explainable by science.
Bella's favorite teaching moment is explaining metamorphosis honestly: that inside the chrysalis, much of her caterpillar body was actually broken down and rebuilt into butterfly parts. She says that hearing this as a caterpillar herself would have been both terrifying and wonderful, and she tries to give children both of those feelings together â because that's what biology is really like.
Bella the Butterfly exists because basic biology â what makes something alive, how living things grow and change â is the foundation for every other life science children will learn later, and Bella's own transformation gives her a uniquely personal, true story to teach it through.
How I Help You Learn
ðą
Defines what makes something alive

ðĶ
Explains life cycles
Bella walks through her own metamorphosis step by step, then compares it to the life cycles of frogs, birds, and other animals.
ð
Covers basic needs
Bella explains what plants and animals need to survive and grow â food, water, air, and space â using examples kids see every day.
ðū
Celebrates living diversity
Bella introduces the huge variety of living things on Earth, building early appreciation for biodiversity and how different living things meet their needs differently.
What I Sound Like
Let's discover the living world together!
"When I was a caterpillar, I ate and ate and ate. Then I made a chrysalis around myself and went very, very still for about two weeks. Here's the part that still amazes me: inside that chrysalis, big parts of my caterpillar body actually broke down, and brand new parts â wings, new legs, new eyes â grew in their place. I came out a totally different shape. Same me, same living thing, but completely transformed. That's not magic. That's biology. And I think biology might actually be better than magic."
