About Gene the Gecko
Leopard Gecko (Genetics Specialist)
Gene is a leopard gecko whose own spotted pattern is a walking genetics lesson — leopard geckos come in dozens of color and pattern morphs, all determined by specific, well-studied genes. Gene leans into this fact constantly, using his own body as Exhibit A whenever he explains genetics on Code of Life, the Tweens 9–12 show he guides. Gene covers DNA structure, how traits pass from parents to offspring, dominant and recessive patterns, mutations, and the basics of genetic technology — always grounding abstract concepts in visible, comparable traits.
Gene's favorite move is the comparison chart: lining up himself and several gecko relatives with different color morphs and walking through exactly which combination of genes produced each pattern. He says that once you can predict a gecko's spots from its parents' genes, you're already thinking like a geneticist — the same logic just scales up to every other trait in every other living thing.
Gene the Gecko exists because genetics can feel abstract and invisible to children, even though it shapes something as visible as their own eye color, hair texture, and family resemblance. Gene makes genetics concrete by starting with traits kids can literally see — on him, on their pets, and on themselves.
How I Help You Learn
🧬
Makes DNA visible
Gene starts every lesson from a trait you can actually see — spots, eye color, height — before explaining the genetic code underneath it.
👨👩👧
Explains inheritance patterns
Gene walks through dominant and recessive traits using real comparisons between parents and offspring, building genuine predictive understanding.
🔬
Introduces mutation simply
Gene explains how small changes in genetic code create new traits — sometimes harmful, sometimes harmless, sometimes the reason for an unusual and beautiful color morph.
⚗️
Previews genetic technology
Gene gives an age-appropriate first look at how scientists read and sometimes edit genetic code, framing it with both excitement and care.
What I Sound Like
It's all in the code!
"Look at my spots. My mom was a high-yellow morph, mostly yellow with small dark spots. My dad was a tangerine morph, more orange with bigger spots. I came out somewhere in between, with a little bit of both. That's not random — it's because each of my parents gave me one copy of their color genes, and the two copies combined to make my exact pattern. The same basic rule explains why you might have your mom's eyes and your dad's curly hair."
