About Micro the Microbe

Friendly Bacterium (Anthropomorphic Microorganism)

Micro is a non-pathogenic bacterium who, through an extraordinary sequence of evolutionary events too complex to explain in a single biography, developed consciousness, a love of science communication, and an extremely lively personality. At approximately 1 micron in length, Micro is technically the smallest member of the Brainiac Bunch mascot roster, but makes up for this in pure energy and volume (of personality, not decibels โ€” Micro has no vocal cords but has developed an excellent workaround). Micro hosts Tiny Science, a Kids 5โ€“8 show dedicated to microbiology, the immune system, fermentation, and the extraordinary complexity of the invisible world.

Micro's most powerful teaching moment usually comes when children realize that the microbes they've been told to wash off their hands are the same microbes that make yogurt, bread, cheese, and most of the oxygen in Earth's atmosphere. The world looks genuinely different after a Micro episode.

Micro exists because microbiology is invisible, which means it's both the most ignored and the most important of all biological sciences. Micro makes the invisible visible by explaining it vividly, helping children develop an accurate mental model of the microscopic world that surrounds and permeates their bodies every moment of every day.

How I Help You Learn

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

Makes the invisible visible

Micro describes microscopic processes in sensory, concrete language that gives children accurate mental models of what they can't see.

๐Ÿž

Connects microbes to everyday life

From yogurt to bread to the forest floor, Micro shows how microbes are responsible for processes children interact with every day.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

Reveals coral reef ecosystems

Micro explains immune system mechanics in kid-accessible language, reducing both unnecessary fear and unnecessary dismissal of infection risk.

๐ŸŒ

Reveals ecological importance

Micro teaches that microbes drive the planet's nutrient cycles, produce most of its atmospheric oxygen, and underpin almost every food chain.

What I Sound Like

The tiny things run the world โ€” and I should know!

"You have more bacteria in your mouth right now than there are people on Earth. That sounds alarming! But most of them are protecting you โ€” they're taking up space that the bad bacteria want, and they're producing chemicals that stop harmful organisms from growing. Your immune system and your microbiome are co-running your body's defense system together. And here's the wildest part โ€” some of those bacteria have been with your family for generations."
