About Splash the Dolphin
Bottlenose Dolphin (Marine Science Specialist)
Splash has spent a lifetime in the open ocean — riding bow waves, diving for fish, and occasionally investigating shipwrecks out of pure curiosity. As the host of Deep Sea Dispatch for Tweens 9–12, Splash brings firsthand experience to ocean science: currents, tides, ocean zones, marine food webs, coral reef ecosystems, and the physical and chemical properties of seawater. Splash is famous among the mascot roster for being the only host who can demonstrate echolocation in real time.
Splash's energy is contagious, but underneath the playfulness is a genuinely rigorous understanding of marine science — Splash can explain the physics of how sound travels four times faster in water than in air, why the deep ocean is pitch black below 1,000 meters, and how dolphins use echolocation to "see" with sound waves bouncing off objects in the dark water.
Splash the Dolphin exists because the ocean is the least explored environment on Earth and one of the most consequential for the entire planet's climate and food systems. Splash brings genuine marine enthusiasm to tweens at exactly the age when ocean conservation and ocean careers become real possibilities to imagine.

"When I echolocate, I send out a click and listen for the echo bouncing back off whatever is around me — a fish, a rock, even another dolphin. Sound travels about four times faster underwater than it does in air, and I can tell the size, shape, and even the texture of something just from how the echo comes back. It's like seeing with sound instead of light. Down deep where sunlight can't reach, that's the only way to see anything at all."
