What is it?
Botany is the science of plants β and plants are absolutely everywhere! From the tiniest moss on a rock to the tallest redwood tree, plants make up most of the living world. They are the foundation of almost every food chain on Earth, and without them, the air we breathe would not exist.
In Little Lab Challenges Season 1, Episode 8 β Walking Water Colors β is a botany experiment that reveals one of the most important processes in all plant biology: capillary action. Freddy and Fix set up seven cups in a rainbow circle, connected by folded paper towel bridges, and over 60 minutes the colored water walks uphill from cup to cup, fills the empty cups, and the colors mix. This is the exact same process plants use to pull water from the soil all the way up to the tips of their tallest leaves β against gravity, through microscopic tubes called xylem.
π± The Celery Extension Experiment!
After the Walking Water experiment, try the celery extension: stand a stalk of celery (with leaves) in a cup of deeply colored water and leave it overnight. The next day, slice across the stalk and look at the cut end β you will see colored dots in a ring pattern. Those dots are the xylem tubes, now stained with food coloring! This is the most powerful way to actually see plant water transport structure.
Botany connects naturally to chemistry (photosynthesis is a chemical reaction), physics (capillary action involves surface tension and adhesion), and environmental science (plants create oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, and form the base of all ecosystems). A young botanist who understands how plants drink is already thinking like a scientist.

Episode 8 (Walking Water Colors) is one of the best beginner botany experiments in Season 1 because the setup takes only 5 minutes and then the science happens on its own over 60 minutes. Set it up FIRST before doing anything else β by the time you finish another experiment or activity, the water will have walked! You need 7 cups, food coloring (red, yellow, blue), and paper towels. The strongest connection to make: after the experiment, buy one stalk of celery and stand it in colored water overnight. Slice it the next day and see the xylem tubes stained with color β this makes the invisible visible and is a memorable science moment for young children.
