Capillary action is how water can travel upward through very narrow tubes or spaces, even though gravity is normally pulling everything downward. It happens because water molecules are attracted to certain surfaces and to each other.
Freddy set up paper towels folded into strips connecting cups of colored water. Over time, the colored water climbed right up the paper towels and traveled into the empty cups in between — all thanks to capillary action!
This same process is how real plants drink. Water travels up through tiny tubes inside roots and stems called xylem, climbing all the way up to the leaves at the top, even in a very tall tree.
