A crosslink is a small connection that joins separate polymer chains together, a bit like the rungs of a ladder connecting the two long side rails. Crosslinks help turn loose, runny chains into something stretchier and stronger.
When Fix added the activator to his glue, it created crosslinks between the polymer chains already in the glue. Those new crosslinks are exactly what changed the liquid glue from runny to stretchy, bouncy slime.
The more crosslinks that form, the stiffer and less runny the slime becomes. Scientists who design real materials like rubber and plastic carefully control crosslinking to make materials that are just the right amount of stretchy or stiff.
