Density

(DEN-sih-tee)

How tightly packed the tiny pieces inside something are — it decides what floats and what sinks!

What Does It Mean? 🤔

Let's learn together

🧪

Density tells you how tightly packed the tiny pieces inside something are. If a lot of mass is squeezed into a small space, something has high density. If the same amount of space has less mass packed in, it has low density.

Fix built a tower with honey, dish soap, water, oil, and rubbing alcohol all in one cup. Even though he poured them in one after another, they sorted themselves into neat layers based on density — the densest liquid sank to the very bottom!

Density is also why some solid objects float and others sink. Anything less dense than water floats on top, and anything denser than water sinks straight down, no matter how big or small it is.

Real examples

🍯

Honey is denser than water, so it sinks all the way to the bottom!

🛢️

Oil is less dense than water, so it always floats on top!

🧊

Ice is slightly less dense than liquid water, which is why ice cubes float!

👨‍👩‍👧 Teaching Tips

Use the density tower as a hands-on anchor experience — once kids see liquids physically stack by density, the abstract definition becomes much easier to recall.

🏫 Classroom Ideas

Have students predict the layer order of common liquids (water, oil, honey, dish soap) before the demonstration, then compare their prediction order to the real result.
