Oxidation is a chemical reaction that happens when a substance combines with oxygen. One of the most common examples is rust, which forms when iron slowly reacts with oxygen in the air or water.
Freddy left a shiny nail in a cup of water for several days. Slowly, the nail started turning orange and flaky — that color change was oxidation happening right in front of the class, one tiny reaction at a time.
Oxidation does not always make rust. It is also why a sliced apple turns brown after sitting out, and why some metals are coated in paint or other materials to protect them from oxidizing too fast.
