Light usually travels in a straight line. But when light moves from one material into a different one — like from air into water — it slows down a tiny bit and bends! This bending is called refraction.
Freddy and Fix tested this by sticking a pencil into a glass of water and looking at it from the side. The pencil looked like it suddenly bent right where it entered the water — even though the pencil was perfectly straight the whole time!
Refraction happens because light travels at different speeds through different materials. Air, water, and glass all bend light by different amounts, which is exactly how glasses, cameras, and telescopes work!
