Water molecules love to stick to each other so much that the very top layer of water acts almost like a stretchy invisible skin. This pulling-together effect is called surface tension.
Freddy showed surface tension by carefully floating a paperclip right on top of a glass of water. Even though metal is much denser than water, the surface tension held the paperclip up without it sinking!
Surface tension is also why water forms round droplets instead of flat puddles, and why some insects like water striders can walk right across the top of a pond without sinking in.
