Have you ever noticed swirly rainbow colors on a soap bubble or a puddle with oil in it? That is called thin-film interference, and it happens because the layer of soap or oil is incredibly thin — thinner than a hair!

Light hits the thin layer and some of it bounces off the top, while some goes through and bounces off the bottom. When those two bounced light waves come back out together, they mix in a way that makes some colors brighter and some colors disappear.

Because the soap film is always moving and changing thickness, the colors swirl and shift right before your eyes. Freddy and Fix watched this happen on giant bubbles they blew during an experiment!
