Color Explosion Art

In this activity, you will create a swirling color explosion in milk using dish soap and food coloring, then compare whole milk and skim milk!

Before You Start

Get everything you need

🧰 Materials

Whole milk (1 cup)

Skim milk (1 cup) for comparison

Shallow dish or plate (2 for comparison)

Food coloring (3–4 colors)

Dish soap

Cotton swabs (several)

Draw Your Color Swirl printable

Pencil and colored pencils

⚠️ Safety First!

No special help needed — just protect your table and don't drink the milk after!

  • Do not drink the milk   after the experiment

  • Food coloring may stain clothing and surfaces — use old clothes

  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling dish soap

  • The milk canbe reused for 2–3 additional soap touches

What You'll Do

You're going to create a stunning, swirling color explosion right in a dish of milk — using nothing but food coloring and a single drop of dish soap!

Milk is full of tiny fat molecules that are normally holding onto each other tightly. The moment a drop of soap touches the milk, it breaks those connections apart, and the fat molecules race away in every direction — dragging all your beautiful colors along for the ride!

Then you'll compare whole milk to skim milk to discover a surprising secret: the more fat in the milk, the bigger and more dramatic the color explosion!

Follow along carefully

Pour the Milk

Pour whole milk into a shallow dish — just enough to cover the bottom in a thin layer.

Tip: A shallow layer works much better than a deep one!

Let It Settle

Let the milk sit still for 30 seconds until there are no ripples.

Tip: Set a timer so you don't rush this step!

Add the Colors

Add 4–5 drops of different food coloring around the dish — space them evenly, do NOT stir.

Tip: Spread your colors out around the edge for the best swirl pattern!

Predict the Explosion

Make your prediction: where will the colors go when soap touches the center?

Tip: Write or draw your guess before testing it!

Touch the Soap

Dip your cotton swab in dish soap. Gently touch just the TIP to the center of the milk.

Tip: Just a light touch — you don't need to stir or press!

Watch and Compare

Watch the explosion! Then dump and rinse the dish and repeat with SKIM milk. Is the explosion bigger or smaller?

Tip: Whole milk has more fat, so watch closely for the difference!

Try It Different Ways

Focus on watching and describing the colors as they swirl. Use words like "spinning," "exploding," and "racing" to talk about what they see.

Try touching the soap swab to different spots — a color drop, the edge of the dish, near the wall. Does where you touch change the pattern?

What's Happening?

🧒 Kid Explanation

Milk has tiny invisible fat particles floating inside it, and they are normally holding hands tightly with each other, kind of like a big circle of friends. That's called surface tension.

The moment a drop of soap touches the milk, it breaks that handholding apart! All those fat particles suddenly let go and zoom away from each other in every direction — and since your food coloring is floating right there with them, it gets pulled along in a beautiful, colorful explosion.

🔬 Grown-Up Explanation

This activity demonstrates surface tension and the action of surfactants. Milk fat molecules are suspended throughout the liquid and held together by intermolecular forces that create surface tension at the milk's surface. Dish soap is a surfactant — a molecule with both a water-attracting and a fat-attracting end — that disrupts these intermolecular bonds on contact. As the soap molecules race to surround and bind with the fat molecules, they create rapid, chaotic movement that drags the food coloring along with it. Whole milk produces a more dramatic reaction than skim milk because it contains significantly more fat for the surfactant to interact with. 


This supports NGSS 2-PS1-1, classifying materials by observable properties including how they interact with other substances.

Test 2%, whole, and skim milk side by side. Rank them from biggest explosion to smallest, and explain what you notice about fat content.

🏆 Challenge: Multiple Soap Touches

After the first explosion settles, touch the soap swab to a new spot. Does it still work, or has the soap used up all the milk's fat connections?

🌍 Real-World Connection

This is the exact same science as washing greasy dishes! Soap breaks apart grease and fat on your dishes the same way it breaks apart the fat in milk.
