Rainbow Paper Art

In this activity, you will dip black paper into water with a thin layer of nail polish to capture a swirling rainbow pattern made by light bouncing through a super-thin film!

Before You Start

Get everything you need

Bowl of water

Clear nail polish (any brand)

Black construction paper (1–3 sheets)

Tweezers (optional)

Flat surface for drying

Light source to view the result

⚠️ Safety First!

Ask an adult to help you open the nail polish and supervise the dipping step!

  • Use nail polish in a well-ventilated area — open a window

  • An adult must open the nail polish bottle and supervise dipping

  • Keep nail polish away from eyes and mouth

  • Wash with soap and water if it gets on skin

  • Let the nail polish water evaporate outdoors — do not pour down a drain

What You'll Do

This works because of  something called refraction — light bending as it passes through the super-thin layer of nail polish. The bending splits white light apart into all the colors hiding inside it.

By the end, you'll have your own piece of rainbow science art to keep, plus a real answer for why bubbles and oily puddles do the exact same color trick!

Rainbow Paper Art

Follow along carefully

Fill the Bowl

Fill a bowl with about 2 inches of still, room-temperature water. Let it settle completely — no ripples.

Tip: Find a spot where the bowl won't get bumped while it settles!

Add the Nail Polish

Open nail polish (adult helper opens the bottle). Slowly drip 3–5 drops onto the water surface. Watch it spread into a thin film.

Tip: Drip from close to the water so the polish doesn't splash!

Let It Settle

Let the film settle for 10 seconds without touching it.

Tip: Count slowly to ten out loud — it helps the film spread evenly!

Dip the Paper

Hold black construction paper at a 45-degree angle. Slowly lower one edge into the water and then lift the paper out in one smooth motion.

Tip: One smooth, slow motion works much better than a fast dip!

Let It Dry

Lay the paper flat on a clean surface to dry — do NOT touch the surface while wet.

Tip: Dry time is about 2 minutes — patience makes the colors pop!

See the Rainbow

Hold your dry paper up to a light source to see the rainbow shimmer.

Tip: Tilt the paper at different angles to see the colors shift!

Try It Different Ways

Little Kids (5-6)

Have an adult do the nail polish dripping step. Little hands can do the paper dipping with help holding the angle steady.

Try the Extension Challenge — layer two different nail polish colors and predict what pattern you'll get before dipping!

What's Happening?

🧒 Kid Explanation

White light looks like   it has no color — but it's secretly made of every color of the rainbow all mixed together! When light bounces through the thin, thin layer of nail   polish floating on the water, it splits those colors apart so you can finally see them.

It's a little like a   magic trick where the "trick" is just science: the layer is so thin that light bouncing off the top and the bottom of it mixes together in a way that makes some colors brighter and some disappear — and that's exactly what   makes the swirly rainbow pattern.

🔬 Grown-Up Explanation

This activity demonstrates thin-film interference, the same optical phenomenon responsible for the colors seen in soap bubbles and oil slicks. Light waves reflecting off the top surface of the nail polish film and light waves reflecting off   the bottom surface (where it meets water) travel slightly different distances. When they recombine, they interfere constructively for some wavelengths and destructively for others, producing the visible color bands. 


This activity directly supports NGSS 1-PS4-3, which asks students to investigate the effect of placing objects made with different materials in the path of a beam of light.

This same thin-film interference effect is why soap bubbles, oil puddles on wet streets, and the back of a CD all show swirling rainbow colors!
