Sound Vibration Station

In this activity, you will build a vibration station with plastic wrap and rice, then test all kinds of sounds to see which ones make the rice jump the most!

Before You Start

Get everything you need

A bowl or pot

Plastic wrap (cling film)

Rice or small seeds (2–3 tablespoons)

Baking sheet or large pot lid

Wooden spoon or metal spoon

Phone or small speaker (optional)

Keep all sounds at a comfortable volume — no banging near ears!

  • Do not bang the pan close to ears — keep sounds at a comfortable volume

  • Make sure plastic wrap is secured tightly

  • If using a glass bowl, ensure it is stable on the   surface

What You'll Do

You're going to build a vibration station using plastic wrap stretched tight like a drum, and rice sprinkled on top — then make the rice jump using nothing but sound!

Sound isn't just something you hear — it's actual physical movement, called vibration, traveling through the air. When sound waves hit your plastic wrap drum, they make it vibrate, and that vibration bounces the rice right off the surface!

You'll test all kinds of sounds — loud versus soft, near versus far, even music with deep bass versus high notes — to discover exactly which sounds make the rice jump the highest.

Stretch the Plastic Wrap

Stretch plastic wrap tightly over your bowl — it should be as taut as a drum skin. Secure the edges firmly.

Tip: The tighter the wrap, the more dramatically the rice will jump!

Sprinkle the Rice

Sprinkle rice evenly over the plastic wrap surface.

Tip: A thin, even layer works best for watching it jump!

Position the Baking Sheet

Hold a baking sheet 6–12 inches above the bowl (not touching).

Tip: This becomes your "drum" to bang for the first test!

Bang and Watch

Bang the baking sheet with your spoon — one firm hit. Watch the rice jump!

Tip: Did it jump high, medium, or low? Record your result!

Compare Loud vs Soft

Test LOUD vs SOFT hits — record results. Then test NEAR (4 inches) vs FAR (18 inches).

Tip: Try humming, speaking, and singing high vs low notes too!

🧒 Kid Explanation

When you bang the pan, it shakes back and forth super fast — way too fast to see! That fast shaking is called vibration, and it pushes the air around it, sending the push outward as a sound wave.

When that sound wave reaches your plastic wrap drum, it makes the wrap vibrate too, and that shaking bounces the rice right up into the air! Louder sounds create bigger vibrations, which is why loud sounds make the rice jump higher than quiet ones.

🔬 Grown-Up Explanation

This activity provides direct physical evidence that sound is a mechanical wave caused by vibrating matter. Striking the baking sheet causes it to vibrate, which compresses and rarefies the surrounding air, propagating a sound wave outward. When this wave reaches the taut plastic wrap, it causes the membrane to vibrate as well, transferring kinetic energy to the rice grains resting on its surface and causing them to bounce. Louder sounds correspond to greater amplitude (larger vibrations), producing more dramatic rice movement, while sounds closer to the membrane transfer more energy than sounds farther away due to energy dissipation over distance. 


This activity directly supports NGSS 1-PS4-1, providing evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.
