Spy Invisible Ink Investigation

In this activity, you will write secret messages with invisible ink made from common kitchen liquids, then test which liquid reveals the clearest message with heat!

Before You Start

Get everything you need

🧰 Materials

Lemon juice (fresh or bottled)

Orange juice/Apple Juice/Milk

Small cups (4)

Cotton swabs (several)

White paper (4+ sheets)

Warm lamp (60-watt incandescent or warm LED)

⚠️ Safety First!

Ask an adult to manage the warm lamp reveal step — no flames, ever!

  • NEVER use a candle or open flame — a warm lamp bulb only

  • The paper will get warm — adult must hold it and move it constantly

  • Do not hold paper in one spot — it can scorch 

  • Keep lamp away from flammable materials

What You'll Do

🕵️

You're going to become a secret agent scientist! You'll write a hidden message using lemon juice as invisible ink — completely invisible once it dries — then reveal it using nothing but the warmth of a lamp.

Lemon juice contains a weak acid that turns brown when it gets warm, because heat makes it react with oxygen in the air. That's the secret behind your spy message reveal!

Then you'll test 3 other kitchen liquids — orange juice, apple juice, and milk — to discover which one makes the absolute best invisible ink.

Follow along carefully

Set Up the Cups

Set out 4 small cups. Label them: Lemon Juice, Orange Juice, Apple Juice, Milk.

Tip: Use sticky notes or tape labels so you don't mix them up!

Make a Prediction

Predict which liquid will make the BEST invisible ink — write your prediction on your Spy Notebook.

Tip: A good detective always guesses before testing!

Write Your Message

Dip your cotton swab in Lemon Juice. Write a short secret message on white paper. Let it dry completely.

Tip: It looks blank when dry — about 2 minutes!

Test All Four Liquids

Repeat with each liquid on a separate sheet of paper.

Tip: Keep track of which paper used which liquid!

Reveal with Heat

ADULT STEP: Hold paper near (not touching!) a warm lamp bulb. Move it slowly back and forth.

Tip: Watch closely — the message can appear within 30–60 seconds!

Rate the Results

Watch the message appear! Rate how visible it is on your Spy Notebook (1–5 stars). Repeat for all 4 liquids.

Tip: Record which one appears clearest — that's your winning ink!

Try It Different Ways

Little Kids (5-6)

Focus on writing simple shapes or letters with lemon juice and watching the adult reveal them with the lamp.

Write and reveal messages with all 4 liquids, rating each one with stars on the Spy Notebook.

What's Happening?

🧒 Kid Explanation

Lemon juice is a little bit acidic — that's the same thing that makes it taste sour! When lemon juice dries on paper, it's totally see-through and invisible, but it's still there, hiding.

When you warm the paper near a lamp, the heat makes the acid in the lemon juice react with the air, turning it brown — and suddenly your secret message appears like magic! It's not really magic though — it's chemistry.

🔬 Grown-Up Explanation

This activity demonstrates oxidation triggered by heat. Lemon juice contains citric acid, which weakens paper fibers when applied. When the paper is later heated, the weakened areas oxidize (react with oxygen) faster than the surrounding untreated paper, turning brown before the rest of the page begins to scorch. This creates a visible contrast that reveals the hidden message. Different liquids contain different concentrations of acids and sugars, which affects how quickly and clearly the oxidation reaction becomes visible — explaining why lemon juice typically outperforms milk as an invisible ink. 


This supports NGSS 2-PS1-4, constructing an argument that some changes caused by heating cannot be reversed.
