Human Anatomy
What is it?
Human anatomy is the science of the human body β every bone, muscle, organ, nerve, and blood vessel that makes you alive and functioning every second of every day. Your body is the most sophisticated machine ever built, and understanding it is one of the most personal and important things you can ever learn.
Two LLC Season 1 episodes connect directly to human anatomy. Episode 8 (Walking Water Colors) demonstrates capillary action β the force that pulls water through plant xylem tubes β but that same capillary action also describes how blood moves through your body's capillaries, the tiniest blood vessels in your circulatory system. Episode 10 (Sound Wave Jumping Rice) demonstrates how sound waves physically vibrate materials β and your eardrum works exactly like the plastic wrap in that experiment. When sound waves hit your eardrum, it vibrates in the same way that the plastic wrap vibrates when music plays near it, converting those pressure waves into signals your brain can interpret as sound.
π Your Eardrum and the Plastic Wrap!
In Episode 10, plastic wrap stretched over a bowl vibrates when sound waves hit it, making rice grains jump and bounce. Your eardrum is a tiny membrane stretched across your ear canal, and it vibrates in exactly the same way when sound reaches it. The vibrations travel through three tiny bones (the malleus, incus, and stapes β the three smallest bones in your body) and into the cochlea, where they become electrical signals your brain reads as sound. You are literally feeling sound waves, just like the rice does!
Human anatomy is a topic that children engage with powerfully because it is literally about themselves. Every child is fascinated to learn that their heart beats 100,000 times per day, that their body contains 60,000 miles of blood vessels, and that the smallest bones in their body are inside their ears. Making anatomy personal and visible β through experiments that model what the body does β is the most effective way to make this science stick.

The human anatomy connections in LLC come through two episodes. Episode 8 (Walking Water Colors): after the experiment, explain that our blood moves through the tiniest capillaries the same way β by the same forces of adhesion and cohesion that pull water up a paper towel. Episode 10 (Sound Wave Jumping Rice): after the experiment, gently place a hand on your child's throat while they hum β they can feel their vocal cords vibrate with the same physics. Then have them hold a thin piece of plastic wrap near their mouth while humming β they will see it vibrate slightly, modeling the eardrum. These tangible connections from experiment to body are what make anatomy vivid and memorable for young children.

Episode 8 connects to NGSS K-LS1-1 (plants need water β capillary action also operates in human blood vessels). Episode 10 connects to NGSS 1-PS4-1 (sound makes things vibrate β the eardrum is a biological application of this physics principle). For anatomy classroom extension: bring in a stethoscope for students to hear each other's heartbeats, then connect to the circulatory system that capillary action maintains. For the sound connection: have students draw their ear (outer, middle, inner sections labeled) and draw arrows showing how the sound wave journey maps to the Episode 10 plastic wrap demonstration.
