What is it?
Meteorology is the science of the atmosphere and weather β the study of how air, water, and energy interact to create every weather event you experience, from a gentle spring rain to a raging hurricane. Every cloud, every raindrop, every snowflake, and every rainbow is a meteorological event with a scientific explanation.
The connection between Little Lab Challenges and meteorology begins with Episode 1 β Rainbow Paper Magic. In this experiment, Freddy and Fix float nail polish on water, dip black paper in, and pull out a shimmering rainbow. The science behind this β thin-film light interference and refraction β is exactly the same physics that creates real rainbows in the sky. When light enters a raindrop, it slows down and bends (refracts), reflects off the back of the drop, and bends again as it exits. Because each color of light bends at a slightly different angle, white light spreads into a spectrum: the rainbow you see is white sunlight separated into its component colors by millions of raindrops acting as tiny prisms.
π A Rainbow in the Sky and a Rainbow on Paper!
The nail polish rainbow in Episode 1 uses thin-film interference (slightly different physics from a rain rainbow) but demonstrates the same fundamental truth: white light is not a single color β it is all colors mixed together. When any transparent material bends or reflects light at different angles for different wavelengths, a spectrum appears. Real rainbows (refraction through raindrops) and nail polish rainbows (thin-film interference) both reveal the hidden colors inside white light. Meteorologists study atmospheric optics β the science of how light behaves in the atmosphere β to understand halos, sun dogs, and rainbows.
Meteorology matters every day β weather affects farming, transportation, construction, sport, travel, and emergency preparedness. Understanding basic weather science helps children make sense of their daily world: why is the sky blue? What makes fog? Why does it feel colder in the shade? Why is the weather different in different places? These are all meteorology questions with fascinating scientific answers.

Episode 1 (Rainbow Paper Magic) is the easiest experiment in Season 1 β it requires only clear nail polish, a shallow dish of water, and black paper, and it produces an immediate rainbow result in under 5 minutes. For the meteorology connection: after making the nail polish rainbow, go outside together on a sunny day after rain and try to find a real rainbow. Ask "Why does the rainbow only appear when the sun is behind us?" (the answer is that you need to be looking away from the sun for the light to refract through raindrops and reach your eye at the right angle). The Color Observation Log printable (free) helps children record what colors they see in both the nail polish rainbow and any real rainbows they observe.

Episode 1 connects to NGSS 1-PS4-3 (light can be reflected, refracted, or absorbed and can change direction).
