Every scientific concept you learn today was discovered by a real person, at a specific moment in history, often after many failed attempts. During World War I and II, intelligence agents used lemon juice, milk, urine, and other organic acid solutions to write invisible messages. The messages would dry clear and be invisible to the naked eye. When heated over a candle or lamp, the organic compounds in the acid would oxidize (react with oxygen), turning brown and revealing the hidden text. The German spy service used invisible ink extensively in both wars, and British counterintelligence developed techniques to detect it β€” including exposing all suspicious mail to heat. Science history also teaches children that science is a human endeavor β€” full of mistakes, lucky accidents, brilliant insights, and long periods of slow progress.
