Zoology
What is it?
Zoology is the scientific study of animals β their bodies, their behaviors, their habitats, their adaptations, and how they relate to each other and to the broader web of life. With over 8 million known animal species on Earth (and many more still being discovered), zoology is one of the broadest and most endlessly fascinating branches of biology.
Little Lab Challenges Season 1 connects to zoology through two experiments that model key biological processes shared by animals and plants. Episode 8 (Walking Water Colors) demonstrates capillary action β the same force that moves blood through the tiny capillaries in animal blood vessels. Episode 10 (Sound Wave Jumping Rice) demonstrates sound wave mechanics β the same vibration physics that operates in every animal's hearing system. Fix the Fox, the co-host of Little Lab Challenges, is himself a zoological character β an embodiment of curiosity, problem-solving persistence, and the hands-on approach that real field zoologists bring to their work.
π¦ Animal Hearing Is Amazing!
Different animals hear completely different frequency ranges. Humans hear from about 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Dogs hear up to 65,000 Hz β that's why dog whistles are silent to us but loud to them. Bats hear up to 200,000 Hz and use their own ultrasonic calls to navigate by echolocation. Elephants hear below 20 Hz (infrasound) through their feet β they can feel distant herd communications through the ground. The vibrating plastic wrap in Episode 10 models the basic principle behind ALL animal hearing β a membrane that vibrates in response to sound waves.
Zoology is a great entry point to the broader natural world because animals are the living things children are most familiar with and most emotionally connected to. Every child who has a pet, has visited a zoo, or has watched a nature documentary has already begun informal zoological observation. Building on that natural connection with science β explaining why dogs can hear things we cannot, why fish can breathe underwater, why a caterpillar becomes a butterfly β transforms familiar wonder into genuine scientific understanding.

Zoology in LLC comes through Episodes 8 and 10 β via the capillary action of blood vessels and the vibration physics of animal hearing. After Episode 8, look at the back of your hand and trace the visible veins: "Those are the bigger blood vessels β the capillaries are too tiny to see, but they work exactly like the paper towel bridges." After Episode 10, try a fun animal hearing comparison: whistle at different pitches and ask which frequency seems loudest to your dog or cat (if you have one) β they will react differently to different pitches, demonstrating the different hearing ranges the episode discusses. Fix the Fox as a character can be a starting point for discussing real fox biology β what do foxes eat? Where do they live? How do they communicate?

Episode 10 (Sound Wave Rice) connects to NGSS 1-PS4-1 (sound makes things vibrate) β then bridges to zoology through animal hearing anatomy.
For classroom zoology extension: bring in animal cards showing a range of hearing capabilities (bat, elephant, dog, human) and rank them from highest to lowest frequency range.
Ask: "Why might a bat need to hear frequencies a human cannot?" β this connects physics to zoological adaptation. The Sound Wave Tracker (free printable) can be extended with an animal hearing comparison chart.

π Homeschool Guide
Episodes 8 and 10 together make a strong 2-session zoology introduction focused on animal senses and physiology.
Week 1: Episode 8 + lesson on the circulatory system in animals (capillaries, blood vessels, how blood delivers oxygen).
Week 2: Episode 10 + lesson on animal hearing (compare human, dog, bat, elephant, and whale hearing ranges β graph them by frequency).
Week 3: Animal adaptation unit β pick five animals and diagram one key adaptation for each.
Week 4: Field zoology β observe one local animal species (birds, squirrels, insects) for 15 minutes, sketch what you observe, and write three observations in a science notebook. This progression moves from physiology (how the body works) to ecology (how animals live in their environment).
