What is it?

Zoology is the scientific study of animals β€” their bodies, their behaviors, their habitats, their adaptations, and how they relate to each other and to the broader web of life. With over 8 million known animal species on Earth (and many more still being discovered), zoology is one of the broadest and most endlessly fascinating branches of biology.

Little Lab Challenges Season 1 connects to zoology through two experiments that model key biological processes shared by animals and plants. Episode 8 (Walking Water Colors) demonstrates capillary action β€” the same force that moves blood   through the tiny capillaries in animal blood vessels. Episode 10 (Sound Wave Jumping Rice) demonstrates sound wave mechanics β€” the same vibration physics that operates in every animal's hearing system. 🦊 Animal Hearing Is Amazing!

Different animals hear completely different frequency ranges. Humans hear from about 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Dogs hear up to 65,000 Hz β€” that's why dog whistles are silent to us but loud to them. Bats hear up to 200,000 Hz and use their own ultrasonic calls to navigate by echolocation. Elephants hear below 20 Hz (infrasound) through their feet β€” they can feel distant herd communications through the ground. The vibrating plastic wrap in Episode 10 models the basic principle behind ALL animal hearing β€” a membrane that vibrates in response to sound waves.

Zoology is a great entry point to the broader natural world because animals are the living things children are most familiar with and most emotionally connected to. Zoology in LLC comes through Episodes 8 and 10 β€” via the capillary action of blood vessels and the vibration physics of animal hearing. After Episode 8, look at the back of your hand and trace the visible veins: "Those are the bigger blood vessels β€” the capillaries are too tiny to see, but they work exactly like the paper towel bridges." After Episode 10, try a fun animal hearing comparison: whistle at different pitches and ask which frequency seems loudest to your dog or cat (if you have one) β€” they will react differently to different pitches, demonstrating the different hearing ranges the episode discusses. Fix the Fox as a character can be a starting point for discussing real fox biology β€” what do foxes eat? Where do they live? How do they communicate?
